The long read

Wilson Pro Staff 97 in depth

The Wilson Pro Staff 97 stands as one of the most respected performance racquets in the modern game, carrying forward a lineage that traces back to the iconic frames once wielded by legends of the sport. Built with a 97 square inch head size and a 16x19 string pattern, this racquet is designed for the intermediate to advanced player who values precision, control, and the kind of crisp, connected feel that lets you shape shots with confidence. The braided graphite and basalt construction gives the frame a dense, stable feel at contact, allowing players to drive through the ball with authority while maintaining the touch needed for delicate volleys and drop shots near the net.

Exceptional control for advanced and professional players— Court notes, 29 sessions / 21h

What truly sets the Pro Staff 97 apart is its exceptional blend of feedback and forgiveness for a player's racquet. The updated Parallel Drilling technology increases the main string's movement, generating a touch more spin and pop without sacrificing the buttery smoothness this line is famous for. At roughly 315 grams unstrung and balanced slightly head light, it rewards a full, committed swing, making it an ideal choice for baseline aggressors and all-court players who like to dictate rallies with flat, penetrating groundstrokes and well-placed serves. The 16x19 pattern also bites into the ball nicely on topspin forehands, giving players the margin to swing freely while still keeping the ball inside the lines.

On court, the Pro Staff 97 delivers a distinctly traditional, plush sensation at impact, a signature trait that has kept it a favorite among competitive players and coaches for years. It transmits detailed feedback through the handle, so you always know exactly where the ball met the strings, which builds trust and confidence during high-pressure points. Whether you're working through drills on the practice court or grinding out three-set battles in tournament play, this racquet offers the kind of dependable, professional-grade performance that helps refine technique while rewarding precision, making it a serious tool for players committed to elevating their game.

Best control racket I've owned

Switched from a more powerful frame and my consistency improved dramatically. The Pro Staff 97 rewards clean technique with laser-precise shots.

Great feel, needs strong strokes

Love the plush, muted feel on groundstrokes. Just know this racket doesn't give you free power—you have to generate your own pace.

Tour-level performance

My coach recommended this after years on a Babolat. The feedback and control at net and on serves is outstanding for an all-court game.

Solid but heavy for long matches

Performance-wise it's fantastic for depth and directional control, but I do feel arm fatigue in three-set matches. Worth it for the precision though.
